In 1914, Beatrix Scott put it up for sale at Christie's, but it did not reach the expected price of 1,000 guineas. That same year, James Greig was the first to suggest that it might be the work of Raeburn. The painting's attribution has always been uncertain and has been expressed cautiously in National Gallery of Scotland publications since 1949. Various gallery guides They stated that the painting was "unparalleled in Raeburn's work" and was considered a "puzzle painting." In 1972, when the Gallery published a history of its collection, The Skating Minister was not even mentioned, and five years earlier it was described as "very different in character from any other known painting by Raeburn". The National Gallery of Scotland's 1989 museum guide stated that it was "...an enigmatic image. It is atypical for the artist (Raeburn), in its style and dimensions; it may well not be by Raeburn." Either way, we love it and it's already part of our collection!
